A quietly saturated Mahal in a softened red field, this antique rug measures 8' 0" x 11' 7" and is a wool piece with a timeworn surface that reads like faded textile. An allover palmette and vine-lattice composition settles into a broad foliate border; motifs are mellowed by even abrash and medium distress which reveals layers of cream and brown beneath the red. The edges show gentle wear and the pile is low and tactile, giving the piece a lived, architectural presence. Circa 1885 - 1900. Its restrained palette and soft patina speak to sustained use and careful craft.
