skala

Swedish for “scale,” Skala suggests proportion and balance. Informed by the geometry of Swedish modernism, the series is thoughtfully evolved, bridging past and present. The name reflects the considered composition of the designs and the nuanced relationship between wool, linen, and silk. It speaks both to the measured proportions of each piece, and the breadth of an enduring design tradition.

Inspired by traditional Swedish röllakan weaving, Skala draws on the geometric compositions and expressive use of color that defined Scandinavian rug design from the 19th through the mid-20th century. The collection reinterprets this heritage through original designs that capture the spirit of their predecessors.

A defining characteristic of röllakan is the subtle interplay of colors, with multiple shades of yarn plied together in each weft. For Skala, we expanded on this technique, blending wool, linen, and silk to create added depth and dimension.

Our weavers dyed hundreds of individual shades, while our design team hand-wove swatches in our Los Angeles showroom, meticulously refining each colorway to achieve the desired balance of color and texture.

The result is a collection that feels both deeply rooted in tradition and unmistakably Woven.
