An ornate Mahal with a softly faded red field and a pale blue-green guard border, woven in wool with cream and white highlights. Large palmettes and scrolling vines form a broad, symmetrical field punctuated by floral medallions and curling arabesques. Surface abrasion and medium distress create a worn, tactile patina; abrash and selective pile loss reveal lighter hues beneath the ground and animate the pattern. The overall effect is of layered time and craft, the motif still well defined despite wear. This antique rug measures 10' 3" x 13' 0". Circa 1885 - 1905
