A Mahal antique rug in wool, this 9' 0" x 11' 8" example reads as a gently worn heirloom. The allover floral lattice and trailing vine motifs have been softened to a whisper of pattern, while the warm red border holds remnants of its original saturation. Surface abrasion, subtle abrash and a few sympathetic patch repairs create a layered, tactile patina across the field. The palette moves between warm terracotta, soft blues and neutral beiges, lending a quiet, aged presence that highlights the rug’s craft and long use. Circa 1880 - 1900.
