The Mahal presents an all-over floral field of linked palmettes and scrolling vines in warm neutral, brown and gold tones. Crafted of wool, this sizable antique rug retains a low level of distress; the surface has mellowed to a gentle, tactile patina while small areas of abrash enrich the composition. Narrow layered borders frame the field, giving measured, architectural edges to the floating medallion forms. Circa 1900 - 1915. At 8' 9" x 11' 10", the piece reads as both historic and quietly modern, its layered tones and refined wear revealing the disciplined language of Mahal design.
