The Persian knot is an asymmetric pile knot: one yarn end emerges between two adjacent warps and the other emerges outside them. The Turkish knot is symmetric: both ends emerge together between the warps. Those structures can help describe a rug, but the names are geographic shorthand. Neither knot alone proves where a rug was made, how old it is, or how good it is.
For technical clarity, this guide uses asymmetric knot and symmetric knot. The older terms Persian or Senneh knot and Turkish or Ghiordes knot remain common in the trade, yet weaving structures do not stop at modern borders. Rugs made in Iran can use symmetric knots, and weaving traditions outside Iran can use asymmetric knots.
A pile knot is a short length of yarn wrapped around foundation warps so its cut ends rise on the face of the rug. Rows of these colored knots build the design; one or more weft passes secure each row within the foundation.
The warps run lengthwise through the rug and usually continue into the end finishes or fringe. Wefts cross the width. Pile yarn is supplementary: it creates the colored surface but is held by the warp-and-weft structure beneath it. That is why a useful construction description should identify the knot together with the foundation, number and character of wefts, warp alignment, materials, pile, sides, and ends.
Hand-knotted construction appears across WOVEN's antique Persian rug collection and antique Turkish rug collection, but those geographic categories contain many local, workshop, village, and period-specific structures. “Hand-knotted” is the broad method; symmetric and asymmetric describe how an individual pile yarn engages the warps.
An asymmetric knot wraps fully around one of two neighboring warps and passes only partly around the other, while a symmetric knot wraps around both warps in the same way. The difference is the yarn path, not the nationality of the weaver.

An asymmetric knot passes around a pair of adjacent warps unevenly: the pile yarn completely encircles one warp, then passes around only part of the other. One cut end rises in the space between the warps; the other rises on the outside of the pair.
The terms open left and open right describe which side of the knot is not fully encircled. Because diagrams can be drawn from the front or back and rugs can be oriented in different directions, any technical record should state the viewing direction and label the warps rather than rely on an arrow alone.
WOVEN's current description of Dorokhsh rugs identifies an asymmetric knot that may be open right or left. That is a useful collection-specific clue, but even a documented knot structure should be read with the rug's foundation, palette, drawing, scale, materials, age evidence, condition, and provenance.
A symmetric knot passes around two adjacent warps in a balanced path, bringing both cut pile ends upward together between the warps. Each warp is encircled in the same way, which gives the knot its symmetric cross-section.
The name Ghiordes comes from an older Western spelling associated with Gördes in western Anatolia, but “Ghiordes knot” should not be confused with a guaranteed place attribution. WOVEN's Ghiordes collection is a specific Turkish category; the symmetric structure itself occurs much more widely.
Likewise, the name “Turkish knot” does not mean every rug woven in Turkey has been structurally verified as symmetric. WOVEN's Oushak and Hereke collections represent distinct Turkish rug traditions. Their individual rugs should be described from object-level evidence rather than a national rule.
The geographic names can mislead because they turn widespread techniques into apparent origin certificates. They are useful historical shorthand, but symmetric and asymmetric knots both occur across Iran, Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and neighboring weaving regions.
The label “Senneh knot” is especially easy to overread. It names the asymmetric structure in older carpet literature, not proof that a rug was woven in Senneh. Similarly, a “Ghiordes knot” describes a symmetric yarn path; it does not establish that the rug comes from Gördes.
At WOVEN, we separate the observation from the attribution. “Asymmetrically knotted pile, open left” is a structural observation. “Probably woven in a particular town during a particular period” is an attribution that needs several agreeing forms of evidence. Keeping those statements separate makes both more useful.
Knot type can often be identified from a clear view of the reverse, but the back is not always conclusive. Dense wefts, depressed warps, compact pile, wear, dirt, repairs, and very fine construction can conceal the yarn path.
On a symmetric knot, the colored pile yarn engages the paired warps evenly. On an asymmetric knot, the node is offset because one warp is fully wrapped and the adjacent warp is only partly wrapped. The distinction is easiest to understand with a labeled cross-section and a large, well-lit detail photograph of both front and back.
Warp depression adds a third dimension. If alternate warps sit on different levels, one half of the structure may be partly hidden from the reverse. A flattened photograph can therefore make a knot appear simpler or more regular than it is. A specialist may need to compare several areas and examine an existing low-pile or damaged location without disturbing the yarns.
Examine rug knots by documenting several clear areas under good light and magnification, without pulling pile, opening the weave, trimming yarn, or sharply folding the rug. The goal is to record visible structure, not force the rug to reveal more than its condition allows.
This process is narrower than determining whether a rug is handmade. Knot type is one question inside a larger construction examination. Valuable, antique, brittle, heavily restored, or structurally unstable rugs should be handled and assessed by an appropriate specialist.
Knot type does not determine whether a rug can carry curved or geometric drawing, how fine it is, or how long it will last. Both structures support highly varied design languages, and both can be tied at different densities with different yarns and foundations.
Asymmetric knots are sometimes credited with finer curvilinear drawing and symmetric knots with stronger geometric construction. Those associations may describe selected traditions, but they are not laws of the knot. Fine yarn, close warp spacing, knot density, skilled color changes, pile height, and finishing can produce precise drawing in either structure.
Durability is equally contextual. The knot must be considered with pile fiber, yarn twist and ply, warp and weft materials, warp depression, weft count and tension, sides, ends, pile height, wear, repairs, use, and care. A structurally intact symmetric rug can be excellent; so can an intact asymmetric rug. Condition belongs to the individual object.
A higher knot count does not automatically mean a better rug. Density can support smaller color units and more detailed drawing, but quality also depends on materials, design, color, execution, handle, finishing, condition, age, rarity, and how coherently the whole rug was made.
Knot count must also be measured and reported consistently. A rug may have different horizontal and vertical counts, depressed warps may complicate what is visible, and multiple-warp or offset knotting can distort a simple squares-per-inch calculation. Compare like with like and state the method.
A coarse knot can be exactly right for a large-scale, open composition; a dense knot can execute an unremarkable design. Fineness describes resolution, not artistic success or market value by itself.
Knot identification becomes more complicated when the rug contains structural variation, multiple-warp knots, depressed foundations, repairs, or worn areas. A single close-up should not be assumed to represent the entire object.
The most common knot misconceptions turn a structural tendency into a categorical verdict. Responsible attribution keeps knot type important but proportionate.

This framework prevents a technically correct observation from carrying more weight than it should. A knot can narrow possibilities or challenge a label, but attribution comes from convergence: several independent clues pointing in the same direction.
Compare Persian and Turkish knots first as structures: asymmetric versus symmetric. Then place that observation within the entire rug. The yarn path can reveal how the pile is attached and may support an attribution, but it cannot certify geography or quality. Read multiple areas, document orientation, examine the foundation, map repairs, and state uncertainty when the evidence is incomplete.
