Cole Sternberg treats history as a surface that can be written over, questioned and re-seen. in this collection, antique rugs from India, Turkey, Iran, China and Europe become grounds for screen print and acrylic, bringing his interest in language, erasure and the passage of time into direct contact with objects that have already endured it.
each work holds two moments at once: the original weaving and Sternberg’s intervention, separated by decades yet joined on a single field. fragments of text, gesture and pattern move across Agra, Sivas, Heriz, Mahal and other traditions, creating singular artworks in which permanence remains beautifully unsettled.
