A Savonnerie of generous proportions in wool, this antique rug reads as an age-softened statement in muted red, gold and neutral tones. The broad oval field is filled with a small repeating lattice that settles into a quietly luminous centre; scrolling acanthus and floral spandrels frame the composition, while layered borders introduce classical laurel and block motifs. The surface shows medium distress and even abrash, lending a velvety, tactile patina that highlights the woven hand. Circa 1900 - 1920. Dimensions: 16' 6" x 23' 2". The softened surface retains a quiet, tactile character shaped by time.
