This Mallayer antique rug in wool measures 3' 10" x 5' 5" and presents a finely balanced field of branching florals, small boteh-like forms, and a central diamond medallion. An ivory ground softens the composition, while red, blue, blush, sage, and taupe accents bring definition to the layered drawing. The border reads with a vivid floral rhythm, slightly worn and beautifully mellowed in places. Circa 1900 - 1915, the overall effect is graceful and quietly expressive, with low distress that preserves the clarity of the design while allowing the age and handling to remain visible.
