This Mallayer antique rug measures 4' 2" x 17' 1" and carries a richly layered field of floral and geometric motifs in deep blue, turquoise, cream, brown, coral, and gold. The narrow format stretches the design into a rhythmic, almost tapestry-like composition, framed by busy borders that sharpen the sense of movement. Low distress and softened wear have mellowed the palette without quieting its detail, allowing the surface to read as both intricate and time-worn. Circa 1885 - 1900, it reflects the dense ornament and color depth associated with Mallayer weaving.
