A compact Oushak in hand-spun wool, this antique rug presents a rich red field threaded with cream, white and warm yellow highlights. Stylized palmettes, small geometric medallions and scattered floral sprays animate a buoyant, painterly ground; a low level of wear softens outlines and produces a tactile, velvety patina. The restrained border band provides a neutral counterpoint, while grey and brown accents lend depth to the palette. The overall effect is quietly architectural and intimately worn, a small piece with generous presence. Circa 1900 - 1915. Measures 4' 8" x 5' 4".
