A restrained Ghiordes woven in wool, this antique rug reads as a study in layered patina. The 5' 4" x 9' 4" proportion frames an elongated central medallion softened by time, surrounded by multiple guard borders that register as rhythmic, worn bands. The red ground has faded to nuanced tones of cream and neutral, with white highlights lingering in the border motifs. Surface abrasion and even abrash lend a tactile, velvety feel; the composition still reads clearly despite medium distress. Circa 1885 - 1900, this piece conveys the quiet geometry and handworn lyric of aged Anatolian weaving.
