American Hook / 12366

An American Hook worked in wool with a restless, oceanic field of layered greens and neutrals. The hooked surface forms rhythmic, painterly striations that gather around a central cluster of abstract shell and starfish forms rendered in cream and muted accents. A scalloped cream inner border and darker outer band frame the composition. The tactile pile, visible abrash and areas of soft abrasion give the piece a lived, material presence. This antique rug reads as both folk image and improvised studio piece. Circa 1895 - 1910. Dimensions: 4' 4" x 5' 10".
