An assertive Serapi in wool, this antique rug measures 7' 2" x 10' 10" and reads as architectural and tactile. A deep red field frames a dark, stepped central medallion punctuated by angular floral vines and hooked palmettes; ivory and teal accents lift the composition. The surface shows low distress with a soft, even abrash and a warm, dry nap that suggests years of calm use rather than heavy restoration. Proportion and scale are characteristic of Serapi design language, the border providing a clarified counterpoint to the busy central field. Circa 1880 - 1895
